After the film is a conversation with director Jake Auerbach. Director is interviewed by art historian Reet Varblane.

Regarded as a leading figure on the British art scene, figurative painter Lucian Freud (1922 – 2011), grandson of Sigmund Freud, lived as a recluse in London. In 1988 during his retrospective at London’s Hayward Gallery, the painter agreed to record an informal conversation with Jake Auerbach, who was helping to hang the show. The result is a quiet, contemplative consideration of what drives an artist: his inspirations, ambitions, approach.

Jake Auerbach is a British film-maker specialising in documentary subjects. Though his films have ranged across the cultural spectrum he is best known for his portraits of artists both contemporary and historical.
Recently Kumu Documentary showed also Jake Auerbach’s documentary about Paula Rego.

    Many thanks to British Council
