    Introduction by Tiina Abel

Perry Miller Adato’s documentary about Paris provides a good overview of the process of how, at the beginning of the last century, the French capital became the centre of radical innovation and experimentation, as well as modernism – the mecca of creative talents from various cultural fields. Painters, poets, musicians, writers, literary scholars, dancers, theatre and film people preferred Paris – Montmartre and later Montparnasse – as the spiritual and creative environment to all the other cities in the world.

Based on a wealth of archival images, letters and photos, reminiscences, interviews and memoirs, we find out what was so fascinating about Paris, why it became a magnet, and how Paris as a city influenced the artists’ lives and oeuvre. Let’s name just a few of the great figures:  Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, D.H Kahnweiler, Gertrud Stein, Jean Cocteau, Igor Stravinski, Sergei Djagilev, Vaslav Nijinsky and many others.
