"I'll have to break my skull before they'll believe me," declares Walter Steiner, the hero of Herzog's documentary, a Swiss wood-carver and one of the world's greatest ski jumpers. The splendid and terrifying isolation of Steiner's jumps are captured in fascinating slow-motion photography.

A voyage into the Himalayas with the great mountain climber Reinhold Messner, with fellow climber Hans Kammerlander, decides to climb two eight-thousanders consecutively - Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II. What makes this undertaking all the more extraordinary is the fact that the two climbers set off on their expedition without oxygen tanks, taking only their backpacks. During the preparations for the climb, Herzog speaks to Messner about his past expeditions.
