Close to Vermeer
Much has been written but little is known about Johannes Vermeer, the creator of much-beloved, iconic paintings, such as “The Milkmaid” and “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. He left behind only a small oeuvre. The documentary follows Gregor Weber, the world-renowned Vermeer expert and flamboyant curator of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In the year before he retires, he is working on his big dream: the biggest Vermeer exhibition ever. Together with Weber, several Vermeer enthusiasts and experts set out to find what makes a Vermeer truly a Vermeer. Through new discoveries and by dissecting the works layer by layer, we get closer and closer to the painter, allowing us to dissect the decisions he made and understand his oeuvre.
