Fragile Memory
A young film-maker discovers a photo archive from the 1960s of his grandfather, Leonid Burlaka (born 1938), a famous cinematographer who worked at the Odesa film studio in Ukraine, but is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Through the digitalisation of a fascinating but partly damaged photo archive of Burlaka’s, his grandson gives insight into the history of Ukrainian cinema. But is it also possible to capture, with the help of these archival materials, the mercilessly fading memory of the grandfather? The intimate and emotional documentary “Fragile Memory” (https://burlakafilms.com/fragilememory) is a sensitive and meditative journey by a young film-maker, Ihor Ivanko, taking us along the paths of collective and personal memory.
