An intimately raw and magical journey through the life, mind and heart of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, told through her own words and brought vividly to life by lyrical animation.

When you hold in your hands the actual words of one of the most important artists of our time, there’s no need to add much more, just the necessary images to illustrate them: photos from the 1930s of Frida with Diego in the United States, and later in their house in Coyoacán and, of course, the paintings, to which Gutiérrez adds animation and colour effects. But what matters here is Kahlo’s voice, telling everything: the accident when she was 18 that marked her life (and ultimately led to her death), her communist affiliation and political commitment, meeting Rivera, jealousy, infidelities and sex (with men and women), the arrival of Trotsky, her disdain for the Surrealists, her love of painting…. This is pure gold, not a single minute wasted.
The film received 20 nominations and won four awards.

The director and editor, Carla Gutiérrez, is an Emmy- and Eddie-nominated documentary film-maker making her directorial debut with Frida. Born in Peru, Gutiérrez received a master’s degree in Documentary Film-making from Stanford University.
