Hell's Stoker
This is a film portrait of Simson von Seakyl, an Estonian sculptor noted for his excellent sense of form. In the early 1980s, he participated in the Soviet-Afghan war as a conscript in the Soviet army. This traumatic experience has haunted him throughout his life: again and again, the past catches up with him, even in his dreams. The only way to confront his demons is to make fun of them.
The documentary clearly captures his character, his creative process and methods, and how it all merges into a coherent whole. It opens up the artist's soul, his honesty and sincerity, and shows his sculptures and objects through a fascinating lens, giving good insight into the artist's work and the difficult and complex creative process.
